Any video game with a dragon involved is often placed on a higher pedestal than other games. The mere sight of the mythical winged creatures in a game causes shock and awe from the audience, and some of the best games in the industry prominently feature dragons in some shape or form. While you might know a few games with dragons, you might not know that there are dozens of other titles where you can experience them as well.
Today, our goal is to identify the best games with dragons that you can play in 2025. These games will either feature dragons as enemies, side attractions, or actual characters that you can play as throughout your journey. We’ve tried to list games that are easily playable in 2025 as well, so you might not see some classic dragon games that are only playable on older consoles.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
- Developer: Bethesda
- Release Date: November 11, 2011
- Platforms: PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch
Perhaps the most famous dragon game is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Right from the start of this iconic open world RPG from Bethesda, dragons are thrust into the forefront. Your character, which you fully create, even has a deep connection to dragonkind, and you’re aptly nicknamed the “Dragonborn” for the entire duration of your playthrough. Dragons are spread out all across the massive map of Skyrim, and you can even be surprised by them as they crash down on your location, forcing you to fight or flee.
Aside from a focus on dragons, Skyrim is simply one of the best RPGs ever created, offering unparalleled character freedom, an expansive loot system, various combat styles, and some of the best exploration in any video game.
Dragon’s Dogma 2
- Developer: Capcom
- Release Date: March 21, 2024
- Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
You know any game with the word “dragon” in the name is going to heavily feature the mythical creatures in some way. While Dragon’s Dogma 2 is jam-packed with dragons everywhere you look, there are still enough of them to satisfy your desire to see and interact with them. Most notably, you can find dragons to fight all over the open world map in Dragon’s Dogma 2. Without spoiling anything, a dragon will appear at a major point during the game’s story as well.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is an in-depth RPG that utilizes a unique class and follower system that has you constantly changing the characters around you. This makes for quite an adventure that’s full of combat, character dialogue, and impressive boss fights.
RuneScape (Old School + Dragonwilds)
- Developer: Jagex
- Release Date: January 4, 2001
- Platforms: PC, Android, iOS
RuneScape can be defined as a point-and-click medieval MMORPG that’s been around since the early 2000s. However, any RuneScape player knows the game can be so much more than that. There are currently three games with the name “RuneScape” in the title: the modern RuneScape MMO, Old School RuneScape, and RuneScape: Dragonwilds. RuneScape and Old School RuneScape are both MMOs that feature similar elements, with the former being modernized and the latter featuring graphics from 2007, while Dragonwilds is a new survival game that was released into early access in 2025.
Regardless of which one you choose to play, you’ll see dragons heavily involved. All three games prominently feature dragons as enemies, with the MMOs famously having a quest called “Dragon Slayer.” Whether you’re hunting down dragon bosses, like Vorkath, or killing regular dragons for their drops, you won’t see any shortage of the beasts in any version of RuneScape.
Elden Ring
- Developer: FromSoftware
- Release Date: February 25, 2022
- Platforms: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC
Elden Ring is another open-world RPG that allows you to hunt down dragons, kill them, and acquire some top-tier loot. However, there’s a major difference in fighting dragons in Elden Ring than there is in a game like Skyrim. Elden Ring was made by FromSoftware, the gaming industry’s most unforgiving developer. Every enemy you come across in Elden Ring is a difficult encounter, and the massive map holds several dragons that will take you several minutes to take down. These dragons are gargantuan in size, can easily trample you, and shoot dragonfire that will deplete your health bar in a matter of seconds. However, if you want access to rare resources and new gear to make your journey easier in Elden Ring, you’ll want to take down every dragon you can find. The scary thing is that the dragons are actually one of the easier bosses you’ll face throughout the game.
Dragon Age: Inquisition
- Developer: BioWare
- Release Date: November 18, 2014
- Platforms: PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC
We have yet another game with the word “dragon” in the title, but this time it’s one of the best RPG franchises on the market. The Dragon Age series has been raging on for two decades, and Inquisition is often regarded as the series at its best. Like all Dragon Age games, Inquisition sees you assume the role of a character, and in this case, your character is essentially tasked with saving the world. The game engages you quickly with its brilliant narrative-driven story and an ensemble of likable characters, some of whom can join your party.
When it comes to dragons, Inquisition offers “High Dragon” enemies–powerful dragons that all have slightly different mechanics. You need to kill all of them across the map in order to complete the Dragon Hunter Collection, which offers various rewards.
Monster Hunter World
- Developer: Capcom
- Release Date: January 26, 2018
- Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
If you’re someone who wants to completely focus on combat and slaying dragons of all kinds, then Monster Hunter World is going to be the game for you. The Monster Hunter series consists of RPGs that do implement characters and a story, but the main focus of the games is hunting down gigantic monsters across a large-scale map. Monster Hunter World follows that same gameplay loop, and there are several oversized dragons for you to hunt down and slay during your time in the game.
One of the best parts about Monster Hunter World is the freedom to utilize different weapons and builds depending on the monster you’re hunting. Different dragons and enemies might call for distinct weapons, which makes you change up your play style dramatically between each fight.
It should be noted that we chose Monster Hunter World over the much newer Monster Hunter Wilds due to the former more prominently featuring dragon-type bosses, but Wilds also has dragons if you’re looking for a more modern experience.
Divinity Original Sin 2
- Developer: Larian Studios
- Release Date: September 14, 2017
- Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, iOS
We haven’t talked about a game where you can actually play as a dragon yet, but that changes now. Divinity Original Sin 2 is widely regarded as one of the best all-around RPGs to ever hit the market. It features a simply staggering amount of depth when it comes to its map, quest design, character builds, and just about everything else in between. You can easily spend 100+ hours in Original Sin 2 without even cracking the surface of the main story, which is absolutely stellar.
Original Sin 2 allows you to create or pick an existing character at the start, and one of those existing characters is the Red Prince, who is a dragon. You can either use this character yourself or recruit the character to join your party and control them that way. In any case, the Red Prince has their own side quest story that you can complete to see more dragons and learn about the character’s backstory.
Pokémon series
- Developer: Game Freak
- Release Date: February 27, 1996
- Platforms: Game Boy, Nintendo DS, Nintendo Switch 1+2
When you think of a game that features dragons, you might not immediately recognize that the Pokémon series actually has more dragons than almost any other game. Of course, that’s slightly misleading since the series features dramatized versions of dragons along with the “Dragon” type of Pokémon. Any Pokémon with the Dragon typing, however, does classify as a dragon, so we’re counting that for the purpose of this list.
When a Pokémon has the Dragon typing, they often look like some form of a dragon and can feature classic dragon attacks, such as Dragonbreath. You can either use these Dragon Pokémon in your party and battle against wild Pokémon and trainers with them, or fight against Dragon Pokémon, which are some of the rarest monsters in any game in the series.
Spyro Reignited Trilogy
- Developer: Toys For Bob
- Release Date: November 13, 2018
- Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch
Spyro the Dragon is one of the first “play as a dragon” games, as the first title in the series was released in 1998. The series does feature modern titles, though, such as the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, which remasters the first three games. While the series doesn’t offer the visceral action you might expect in other games with dragons, most Spyro games feature terrific exploration, fast movement, and heart-warming stories. The graphics are colorfully animated, and the combat isn’t anything too extreme, so Spyro is more of a relaxing experience when it comes to satisfying your inner dragon.
Baldur’s Gate 3
- Developer: Larian Studios
- Release Date: August 3, 2023
- Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
Dragons play a small part in the grand scheme of things when it comes to Baldur’s Gate 3. However, the fact that dragons are a part of the game, mainly as enemies you can come across and defeat, is a great excuse to play one of the best RPGs of this generation. Baldur’s Gate 3 is an epic journey taking over 100 hours that gives you complete freedom over the choices you make, the direction you go, and the enemies you fight. Even when it comes to the most notable dragon in BG3, Ansur, you can speak with them and choose not to fight if you want, and you have the right abilities present in your party of characters. Come for the dragons initially in BG3, but you’ll stay because of how fantastic the game truly is.
Day of Dragons
- Developer: Beawesome Games
- Release Date: December 4, 2019
- Platforms: PC
Day of Dragons gives you full control over your own dragon in an online survival setting. At the start of the game you begin as a dragon hatchling, and your main goal is to get stronger so you can explore more of the massive map that lies in front of you. Speaking of the map, it features several distinct biomes that all offer different resources, creatures, and other reasons to explore it. As your dragon grows, it can unlock special abilities that allow you to become the dragon of your dreams. You can get it to fly, breathe fire, turn invisible, and perform other unique actions. It should be noted that these special kinds of dragons do have to be unlocked, and some of those unlocks require real money.
The online aspect of Day of Dragons isn’t too intrusive if you just want to play solo, but playing with friends and interacting with others is going to be more enjoyable for most players.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
- Developer: Nintendo
- Release Date: May 12, 2023
- Platforms: Nintendo Switch 1+2
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is another game you might not think of when it comes to games with dragons. However, there are several of the scaly creatures lying in wait for you around the gigantic map of Hyrule. It takes quite an effort to reach the dragons, as you have to perform feats of parkour and complete some puzzles to eventually come face-to-snout with them. The effort is worth the reward, though, as defeating dragons offers plenty of fantastic rewards in Tears of the Kingdom. Aside from your dragon hunting, Tears of the Kingdom is a staggeringly massive RPG with a great story and characters, along with one of the most interactable maps you’ll ever see.
Age of Wonders 4: Dragon Dawn
- Developer: Triumph Studios
- Release Date: June 20, 2023
- Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
Our final entry is the Dragon Dawn DLC in the game Age of Wonders 4. Age of Wonders 4 is a 4X, turn-based strategy game that allows you to build an empire from scratch and engage in multiple styles of combat. You’ll see the regular strategy game combat that takes place from a top-down perspective of the entire map, but you can also take control of a character and delve deeper into different areas of the map. With your character, you’ll engage in turn-based combat with a host of other NPCs and enemies.
The Dragon Dawn DLC adds dragons to the mix by allowing you to become one of the creatures. You can acquire draconic abilities, skills, and equipment with your dragon and even use the Tome of Dragons item to summon other dragons to your aid in combat. The DLC completely changes the base game of Age of Wonders 4, and it’s well worth your time and money.
