It seems Halo on PS5 could possibly release sooner than anticipated. This is according to a data miner who found titles compatible with PlayStation in the Halo games’ API (application programming interface).
Is Halo coming to PS5?
While a definitive answer to Halo’s arrival on PS5 is still unknown, evidence is stacking towards it happening sooner rather than later. According to Grunt.api (H/T RebsGaming), a data miner who has access to the Halo games’ API, claims a Halo game is coming to PlayStation “very soon.” While details like the specific release date and the title of the game are not known, Grunt.api says the title ID is different from the previously released Halo: Infinite and the Master Chief Collection, and they believe it will have crossplay as the unnamed game is compatible with PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
Just in the past year, there have been several reports regarding a Halo PS5 release. Last year, the Verge’s Tom Warren reported on a remake of the series’ first title, Halo: Combat Evolved, which he claimed Microsoft was considering bringing the game to PS5.
A few months after that report, Microsoft and 343 Industries formally revealed Halo Studios, a rebrand for the developer that handles the long-running Xbox first-person shooter. Alongside the name change, the developer also shared that they would move away from their Slipstream engine and transition to Unreal Engine 5, which evoked more Halo PS5 speculation.
It is still not clear when a Halo PS5 announcement will occur. However, there is a good chance it could happen at this year’s Halo World Championship in October. While it was not implicitly said, Halo Studios issued a statement addressing rumors regarding the series.
“Last year at HaloWC, we premiered ‘A New Dawn’ where we talked about the switch to Unreal Engine, gave you a behind the scenes look at Project Foundry, and debuted our evolution to Halo Studios as we enter a new chapter for Halo,” said the statement. “For us, ‘A New Dawn’ was just the beginning – at this year’s HaloWC, we look forward to continuing the conversation. Speculation is always fun, but if you want the official scoop on what Halo Studios has been working on, you won’t want to miss this year’s Halo World Championship.”
