The Super Mario Bros. Movie has earned more than $1 billion at the box office so far, and it’s still putting up big numbers. Nintendo did not make the movie, of course, but the company still stands to earn substantial funds from its massive success.
Gaming analyst Hideki Yasuda from Tokyo Securities told Nikkei that if The Super Mario Bros. Movie reaches $1.5 billion USD at the box office, Nintendo would see a contribution to its own revenue of more than $220 million USD. Nintendo owns the license and worked out a deal with animation studio Illumination to develop and distribute the movie. The exact terms of the deal have not been made public, however.
Should The Super Mario Bros. Movie come to a streaming subscription service like Netflix, Yasuda estimated that Nintendo could earn “billions of yen” per year in revenue. (1 billion yen equals about $7.4 million USD). It’s also just one part of ongoing revenue for The Super Mario Bros. Movie after it ends its run in theaters.
