Hollow Knight, a Metroidvania action-adventure game developed by Team Cherry, recounts the adventures of a nameless warrior known as the Knight journeys across Hallownest, which is now a ruined kingdom due to a strange infection. As the Knight travels around Hallownest, the Knight will meet many characters that will help the player understand the game’s story entirely.
One of these characters is Bretta, a beetle and a resident of Dirtmouth. Bretta is trapped somewhere in Hallownest and is waiting for someone to save him. Once the Knight has saved Bretta, she will develop a crush on the Knight. She blushes once the Knight sits next to her for a while, and a couple of drawings and dolls of the Knight and a diary where she talks about the Knight can be found inside her house in Dirtmouth.
In this guide, we will learn how to find Bretta!
Bretta
Bretta can be found at the end of a maze in the southeasternmost part of the Fungal Wastes and the Mantis Village area.
The Knight will fight many different enemies in the Fungal Wastes and the Mantis Village. Still, on the journey to Bretta’s location, the Knight will specifically encounter the following enemies: Mantis Youths, Mantis Warriors, Shrumal Warriors, Shrumelings, and a Sporg. It is worth noting that attempting to find Bretta after killing the Mantis Lords, the optional boss in the Mantis Village, will be far easier, as all of the Mantis Youths and Mantis Warriors will become passive to the Knight and will only attack the Knight if they are provoked.
Before the Knight can find Bretta, it is recommended that the Knight has the Mothwing Cloak ability, which allows the Knight to perform a horizontal dash forward, the Monarch Wings ability, which allows the Knight to perform a secondary jump mid-air, and the Mantis Claw ability, which allows the Knight to cling to walls and jump off of them. With these abilities, finding Bretta will be no challenge at all.
To find Bretta in the Fungal Wastes area, this is what the Knight must do:
- From the middle of the main area of the Mantis Village (the room where it says Mantis Village on the map), go to the right where the Knight will find a Mantis Youth, climb up the tall platform above the pool of acid with the help of the Mantis Claw ability or the Monarch Wings ability, continue heading to the right, drop down the gap, jump to the next platform, continue heading to the right, and take the exit.
- Upon entering the next room, the Knight will encounter a Mantis Warrior. Continue heading to the right, where the Knight will find another Mantis Youth, drop down the gap, head to the bottom of the shaft, go to the left, jump across the gap where there is another Mantis Warrior below, continue heading to the left, drop down the gap, head on the path below using the small platform (watch out for the pool of acid), then take the exit on the bottom left. It is worth mentioning that there is a Bench on the other side of the exit where the Knight can sit to heal and save your progress.
- Then, continue heading to the left, drop down the gap on the left, drop down the gap on the right, drop down the gap on the left, continue heading to the left while also dropping down on the gaps, then head down using the small platforms.
- After that, head to the right and drop down the gaps to head to the bottom, then head to the left, where you will see a statue at the bottom where the Dashmaster Charm can be found.
- Next, head to the wall on the left where there is a hidden narrow path at the bottom left; continue to the left through the hidden path where the Knight will find two Shrumal Warriors and several Shrumelings, head to the wall on the left, climb up the wall on the left using the Mantis Claw ability, at the top jump to the right and perform a secondary jump with the help of the Monarch Wings ability towards the wall on the left above, head up this shaft with the help of the Mantis Claw ability, then jump towards the platform above on the right where the Knight will encounter a Sporg.
- Then, jump towards the wall on the right, head up the wall using the Mantis Claw ability; at the top, jump and dash using the Mothwing Cloak ability towards the wall on the left, head up the wall with the help of the Mantis Claw ability, and jump towards the platform above on the right.
- After that, head to the right, dash in the middle of the spikes towards the wall on the right with the help of the Mothwing Cloak ability, and slide down the shaft while sticking to the wall on the right with the help of the Mantis Claw ability, before reaching the bottom of the shaft and hitting the spikes dash towards the wall on the left, slide down the shaft while sticking to the wall on the left, before hitting the spikes at the bottom dash towards the wall on the right, slide down the shaft while sticking to the wall on the right, dash towards the wall on the left before hitting the spikes, slide down the shaft while sticking to the wall on the left, and dash towards the platform on the right before hitting the spikes at the bottom.
- Next, head to the right, jump up the slightly elevated platform, climb up the wall on the right with the help of the Mantis Claw ability, and jump towards the safe spot on the wall on the left of the shaft before hitting the spikes above, jump towards the safe spot on the wall on the right above the spikes, continue heading up the shaft, jump towards the wall on the left before the spikes above, continue heading up the shaft, jump towards the safe spot on the wall on the right before hitting the spikes above, head up the shaft, then jump towards the thin platform above on the right.
- Then, drop down the narrow shaft on the right while sticking to the wall on the left, then before reaching the spikes at the bottom of the shaft, dash towards the platform on the right.
- Finally, head to the right, jump up the slightly elevated platform, and the Knight will find Bretta!
The Knight can now talk to Bretta, who will say that she does not know she ended up there, and she will be surprised that the Knight wanted to rescue her as everyone just ignores her. After talking to Bretta, head to the right to break the breakable ground and exit the maze.
Once the Knight returns to Dirtmouth, Bretta’s house, which is the rightmost house, will be unlocked. Enter Bretta’s house, and there, the Knight will be rewarded with a Mask Shard!
