Major Cyberpunk 2077 Update Better On PS5 Pro than Xbox

Cyberpunk 2077 VRR update PS5 Pro

CD Projekt Red recently released a major update for its open-world sci-fi RPG, Cyberpunk 2077, which brought Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support for PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X|S. A recent test reveals that the PS5 Pro brings significant improvements over the base PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Cyberpunk 2077 VRR update brings improved frame rates to PS5 Pro

These tests were done by video game tech experts Digital Foundry, who found the PS5 Pro could commonly reach between 70 and 80 frames per second (fps) with the VRR mode enabled in performance mode. This typical mark could increase or decrease depending on the environment. For example, they hit 90 fps in the game’s Nomad introduction and even reached 120 fps when looking up to the sky. However, they also found that more dense areas, like Night City and the Black Market from Phantom Liberty, saw frame rates around 60 fps.

In raytracing mode and VRR enabled on PS5 Pro, Cyberpunk 2077 now consistently reaches 40 fps with all the RT bells and whistles. The base PS5 averages around 35 frames per second.

In comparison, the Xbox Series X version appears to do nothing. In Digital Foundry’s test, they found that while the console was outputting a VRR signal, the RT mode ran at 30 fps, and the performance mode is capped at 60 fps. They suspect that the Cyberpunk 2077 VRR update for Xbox Series consoles may be broken. However, their tests on base PS5 don’t seem to make worthwhile improvements, which is possibly indicative of what the Xbox Series consoles would output, as both consoles are similar.

The Cyberpunk 2077 VRR update is probably the closest PS5 Pro players will get to receiving a console-specific graphics option. While it doesn’t improve ray-traced shadows or reflections, it does essentially give players a balanced graphics option.
