In case you missed it, just before the weekend, a PS5 remake of an acclaimed PS2 game was announced out of nowhere. During Friday’s Nintendo Direct, Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo revealed Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake for modern platforms.
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake brings one of PS2’s best horror games to PS5
Fatal Frame 2 originally released in 2003 to critical and commercial success, and earned nominations for several awards. The game was praised for its atmosphere and design, and widely regarded as one of the best survival horror games on PlayStation.
Now, a “full” remake is scheduled for early 2026.
“This title has undergone a complete overhaul, with improvements to everything from visuals and audio to the core gameplay systems and controls,” Koei Tecmo announced. “The signature Camera Obscura mechanic, used to capture and fend off spirits, remains a key feature, now offering richer and more engaging gameplay in both exploration and combat.”
A new mechanic called “Holding Hands with Mayu” has also been added to allow players to experience a “deep bond between the sisters.”
For those who haven’t played Fatal Frame 2, the game follows the story of sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura, who end up in a mysterious village full of vengeful spirits.
