In a move that we’re dubbing Concord Lite, a new PS5 and PS4 shooter is being “unlaunched” after just one month. 1047 Games announced yesterday that its launch of SplitGate 2 was premature, and the game is being banished back into beta state until at least 2026.
PS5, PS4 shooter SplitGate 2 being ‘unlaunched’ as the original game’s servers shut down
In a lengthy statement, 1047 games also announced that SplitGate 1 servers will be shut down after a month. The original game entered early access in 2019 and officially released on all platforms in 2022.
“We had ambitious goals with Splitgate 2, and in our excitement to share it with you, we bit off more than we could chew,” 1047 Games wrote. “We rushed certain features, made some boneheaded mistakes, and most importantly — we didn’t give you the polished, portal-filled mayhem you fell in love with.”
SplitGate 2’s monetization was also heavily criticized, and 1047 Games has pledged to “simplify” its strategy.
I dabbled into SplitGate 2 when it launched last month, and found it to be a unique game marred by some questionable design choices. Still, the “unlaunch” took me by surprise because SplitGate 2 isn’t a “bad” game. But 1047 reckons that it can’t fix any of its problems without taking it back into beta.
Here’s hoping SplitGate 2 actually does launch in 2026 and doesn’t go the way of Concord…
