PS5 Gets Surprise Remaster of Nearly Decade-Old Action RPG

Anima Gate of Memories PS5 remaster

In news we didn’t expect to see today, PS5 is getting a remaster of a 2016 action RPG series that made its debut on the PS4. 2016’s Anima: Gate of Memories and its 2018 sequel, subtitled The Nameless Chronicles, are being re-released in a bundle as Anima: Gate of Memories I&II Remaster.

Anima: Gate of Memories I&II Remaster for PS5 came out of left field

In a press release, developer Anima Project said that its “two acclaimed” RPGs will be available on November 7 in $34.99 standard format and $79.99 Collector’s edition. Frankly, we’re more surprised by the claim that the Anima games are “acclaimed” because the first game earned a Metacritic average of 52/100 and the second game largely flew under the radar.

PlayStation LifeStyle only reviewed the first game, and we didn’t exactly enjoy it. Maybe we’ll have a better experience with the remaster.

Here’s what the Collector’s edition will come with:

  • A collector’s box
  • The physical PS5 game + an illustrated instruction manual
  • An Artbook
  • The Original Soundtrack on CD
  • A collectable pin & keychain
  • Four character cards & two art

“Anima is a third-person action RPG that weaves together two fates — one of a legendary monster and a mysterious girl with no memory of her past, the other of an immortal soul cursed to wander the world forever,” reads an official overview on PS Store. “Their existence will take an unexpected turn when they discover that all of them have been involved in something sinister, a war in the shadows in which they will have an involuntary leading role in opposing sides of the table.”
