The Super Mario Bros. Movie Has Super Star Second Weekend, Nearing $700 Million

Nothing can stop The Super Mario Bros. Movie at the box office, not even Nic Cage hamming it up as Dracula. The family film from Nintendo and Illumination pulled in another $87 million domestically, meaning ticket sales only declined 41 percent from opening weekend.

That’s a new record for an animated movie in a second weekend, according to Variety. The Super Mario Bros. Movie has raked in $347.8 million in North America, with the worldwide haul now sitting at $678 million.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is already the highest-grossing video game movie of all time and the biggest box office hit overall this year. Previously, Detective Pikachu and Warcraft held the top gaming film spots with over $400 million. The Mario movie is breaking all sorts of records, like becoming Illumination’s biggest opening in history by beating out the original Minions.
