The Super Mario Bros. Movie Powers Up Past $1 Billion Worldwide

Rainbow Road has led to box office gold for The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The Nintendo and Illumination movie starring everyone’s favorite plumbing siblings has now passed $1 billion globally, becoming only the 10th animated film to ever cross that mark.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has now raked in $490 million domestically and $532.5 million internationally to reach the $1 billion milestone. This past weekend–it’s fourth since releasing in North America–the film made another projected $40 million to top the box office once more.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now Universal’s best-performing animated flick domestically, surpassing another Illumination project in Minions: The Rise of Gru. THR adds that it’s also the seventh-highest grossing film worldwide for Universal as well, topping Jurassic World: Dominion and Despicable Me (another Illumination joint).
