Which Horse To Pick In Ghost Of Yotei

Are you curious about which horse to choose in Ghost of Yotei? You actually have a mount once you begin the campaign proper. That said, you’ll be given an option to choose a horse as part of the “Old Trails” quest. Our guide has all the details that you need to complete the related objectives.

Which horse to choose in Ghost of Yotei – Old Trails quest guide

You learn about the Old Trails quest upon arriving at Atsu’s home. While checking out the location and revisiting Atsu’s past, she’ll make a remark about how her father used to take her to the stables west of the river. If you open your map, you should see a point of interest that you can track.

The settler and the stables

Before you can choose a horse in Ghost of Yotei, you have to reach the stables first. Once you’re at the location, talk to the settler to trigger a short cutscene.

It seems that Lord Saito’s men are looking for new mounts. You can hide in the bushes to avoid getting spotted. This allows you to assassinate the hostiles stealthily. Alternatively, you can just rush your foes and take them out in regular melee combat.

Atsu’s memories

After defeating your opponents, follow the merchant to the pond. Upon arriving at the area, a flashback where you relive Atsu’s memories will occur. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Inspect the horse manure and follow the tracks to the other side of the pond.
  • There’s a mound where Atsu’s father, Kengo, will talk about a certain “charm.”
  • Climb up the rock formation and wait for Kengo to speak to Atsu.
  • Return to the stable master to finish the flashback sequence.

The Old Trails rewards: Choosing and naming your horse

When the flashback ends, you’ll be back at the present. Atsu will whistle and cause four horses to gallop to the clearing. This is when you’ll be able to choose a horse in Ghost of Yotei. Here are the options:

  • Dapple Horse
  • Black Horse
  • White Horse
  • Brown Horse – Note that this only appears as an option if you own the Digital Deluxe Edition of the game.

The horse that you choose here will be your permanent mount for the remainder of the campaign. To be clear, there doesn’t seem to be a major difference among these mounts. You won’t experience any advantage–or disadvantage–regardless of your decision.

You do get to name your horse, too:

  • Shimaki (Tornado)
  • Mochizuki (Full Moon) – This was what we chose because it sounded coolest.
  • Homura (Flame)

Because you completed the Old Trails quest, you’ll unlock the “Naming a Friend” trophy for your efforts. Lastly, don’t forget to check out the tree trunk from Atsu’s flashback to receive the Charm of Bountiful Harvest, which increases the amount of wood, flowers, and plants that you collect when foraging.

In any case, that’s everything you need to know about how to get and choose a horse in Ghost of Yotei. If you’re looking for more tips, you can take a look at our beginner’s guide.
