It’s not out of the ordinary for a developer to change aspects of a game post-release. In some ways, that can be beneficial for both the developer and the player. However, the recent Wuchang: Fallen Feathers PS5 update has made some significant changes that players are very unhappy with.
What did the Wuchang: Fallen Feathers PS5 update do?
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is a soulslike set during the late Ming Dynasty. It acts as an alternate timeline where players take on the role of pirate Bai Wuchang as she takes on the Feathering Disease that has taken over the land. As such, there are historical figures the protagonist fights and kills pre-patch. After the update, that has changed.
Soulslike content creator Lance McDonald (@manfightdragon on X) noted that the Wuchang: Fallen Feathers PS5 update makes it so that these historically significant bosses and NPCs can no longer be killed. Instead, they become “exhausted” and can be talked to post-fight.
McDonald points out several of these changes in his thread discussing the Wuchang: Fallen Feathers PS5 update. One of the weirdest examples pertains to one of the most difficult boss fights. Originally, after they die, they would say, “The mortal dream fades… My tale concludes. I understand now… All is as it should be…” Post-patch, he now says, “Hah, still set on this path? Good! That was the trial’s purpose all along! Hahaha!” It’s moments like this that are at odds with its story, which is an alternate history of how the Ming Dynasty ends.
The reason for these changes is seemingly due to backlash from Chinese players who were upset that historically significant figures from the Ming Dynasty could be killed. However, with these changes in place, it seems even more players are upset about the developers changing their initial vision for their game.
