PS6 Release Date Window Hinted at by Sony, Doesn’t Seem Soon

PlayStation 6 (PS6) release date window

PlayStation architect Mark Cerny has given a new interview which suggests that the PS6 release date window isn’t as soon as we thought. Previous leaks, rumors, and speculations pegged the console for a late 2027/2028 launch which is supported by historical pattern, but we might be looking at a release window later than that.

PS6 release date window update is good news for players

Sony has made no secret of the fact that it’s working on the PS6, and development is well underway in partnership with AMD. A number of games have also been confirmed to be targeting the PS6. But Cerny has hinted that we won’t be seeing or hearing anything about the hardware for a couple of years.

In an interview with Tom’s Guide, Cerny was quizzed about Sony’s partnership with AMD. Speaking specifically about next-gen hardware, the outlet pointed out that AMD’s next-gen tech is expected in 2026, to which Cerny responded that Sony won’t be moving as quickly as its partner.

“AMD is moving extremely quickly,” Cerny said. “What I’m trying to do is prepare for the next generation of consoles, so my time-frame is multi-year here.”

Considering we’re entering the latter half of 2025, “multi-year” suggests that the earliest we’ll see the PS6 is late 2028, if not 2029. This will come as a relief to players, who have long been saying that the current generation has been relatively slow to take off, and 2027 is a little too soon for the PS6.
