If you were looking at grabbing a PS5 console, today may be the best time to grab one for the foreseeable future. Sony Interactive Entertainment just announced PS5 console price increases across its entire family of consoles in the U.S.
What are the PS5 console price increases?
As announced in a recent PlayStation Blog post, the prices of the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, and PlayStation 5 Pro will all increase in the U.S. starting tomorrow, August 21. Specifically, the price of each console will increase by $50. Here are the new prices:
- PlayStation 5 – $549.99
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – $499.99
- PlayStation 5 Pro – $749.99
It should be noted that this only affects PS5 console prices. PS5 accessories and other devices, like the PS Portal, DualSense controllers, and Pulse Elite wireless headset, remain at the same price as of now.
Specific details on why PS5 console prices were increased were not given. SIE’s Vice President of Global Marketing, Isabelle Tomatis, gave the following brief statement in the blog post: “Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment. As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. starting on August 21.”
PS5 console price increases have already been implemented in other markets. One of the most recent price hikes occurred in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and Australia and New Zealand. It seemed it was only a matter of time that these increases would hit the U.S.
PlayStation is not the only gaming company impacted by the “challenging economic environment.” Earlier this year, Microsoft announced that Xbox products across the board, which included consoles, controllers, and more, were receiving price hikes. However, this will no longer impact its video game pricing.
