Pokemon Scarlet/Violet: Ultimate Wo-Chien Guide

There are a lot of possible things for the player to do in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: from disbanding the new, seemingly-evil Team Star, discovering more about the mysterious new Titan Pokemon, taking down every single Pokemon Gym and Gym Leader in the Paldea region to participate in the Pokemon League, become the Champion, and be the very best like no one ever was, to even just making the other iconic line a reality and catching ‘em all! To help the player catch ‘em all and more, the player must be familiar with every single species of Pokemon in the Paldea region.

Pokemon Scarlet/Violet: Ultimate Wo-Chien Guide

In this guide, we will learn everything you need about the Pokemon Wo-Chien!

Wo-Chien

Wo-Chien is one of the four Legendary Pokemon known as the Treasures of Ruin that live in the Paldea region. The Treasures of Ruin are made up of Wo-Chien, Chien-Pao, Ting-Lu, and Chi-Yu, and they all have dual types, one of them being the Dark type.

The four Treasures of Ruin are found in special shrines that can be found in different parts of the Paldea region. A shrine can only be unlocked after pulling eight specific stakes scattered in the region. So, as there are four shrines, 32 stakes can be found in the game.

Wo-Chien, the 393rd Pokemon in the Paldean Pokedex, is a Dark and Grass-type Ruinous Pokemon with a body that looks like a snail covered in dark green moss. This head is coated with dark green and dark yellow leaves, two pairs of long curling vines on both sides of its head that contain its eyes with green eyelids, green pupils, and orange sclerae, and a row of wooden tablets curled around its back where a snail’s shell would be found.

According to its Pokedex entry in Pokemon Scarlet, A person’s resentment for writing the king’s evil actions on wooden tablets has covered itself in dead leaves to become a Pokémon known as Wo-Chien.

According to its Pokedex entry in Pokemon Violet, Wo-Chien depletes the life force of vegetation, which causes nearby forests to wilt and fields to become barren.

Basic Information

As mentioned, Wo-Chien is a Dark and Grass-type Pokemon which means that it has:

weakness to: 4x Bug type moves
2x Fairy-type, Fighting-type, Fire-type, Flying-type, Ice-type, and Poison-type moves
resistance to: 0.5x Dark-type, Electric-type, Ghost-type, Grass-type, Ground-type, and Water-type moves
immunity to: 0x Psychic-type moves

Also, Wo-Chien has the Ability called Tablets of Ruin, which will decrease the Attack stat of the Pokemon that are in play by 25%. This Ability will not stack, and the Pokemon with the Ability will become immune to opposing Tablets of Ruin.

These are Wo-Chien’s Base Stats:

HP 85
Attack 85
Defense 100
Special Attack 95
Special Defense 135
Speed 70
Total 570

Wo-Chien has an unknown gender, no known evolutions, and is part of the undiscovered egg group.

Location

As mentioned above, each of the four Treasures of Ruin can be found inside a special shrine which can be unlocked once the player has pulled out eight specific stakes in different locations in the game. The shrine where Wo-Chien can be found is called the Grasswither Shrine, which can be identified through its purple door, and the stakes that unlock that door are purple.

Stake Locations

Before trying to remove the purple stakes, it is important to mention that some purple stake locations may require that the player’s Koraidon or Miraidon (depending on the player’s version of the game) has unlocked some of its abilities.

To find the purple stakes, the player can head to the following locations:

  • A purple stake can be found at the edge of a cliff in the southwestern part of South Province (Area Three) (east of Mesagoza or northwest of South Province Area Five).
  • A purple stake can also be found near the edge of a cliff near the Artazon (West) Pokemon Center (northeast of South Province Area Five or east of South Province Area Three).
  • A purple stake can be found in the southeast outside of Mesagoza (south of Mesagoza East Gate or northeast of Mesagoza South Pokemon Center).
  • A purple stake can be found next to a rock near the edge of a cliff at the top of a mountain slightly west of South Province (Area Five) (northeast of Los Platos or east of the Mesagoza South Pokemon Center).
  • A purple stake can be found near the edge of another cliff northeast of the Los Platos (East) Pokemon Center (southeast of Mesagoza South Pokemon Center or way west of South Province Area Three).
  • A purple stake can be found next to a rock on the ground on top of a waterfall way east of South Province (Area Four) (northwest of the Poco Path Lighthouse or southwest of the Los Platos East Pokemon Center).
  • A purple stake can be found near the edge of another cliff that overlooks the ocean way south of South Province (Area Five) (southwest of the South Province Area Five Pokemon Center or southeast of South Province Area One).
  • A purple stake can be found atop a ledge in South Province (Area Three) (slightly northeast of the Mesagoza East Gate or west of the South Province Area Three Pokemon Center).

To remove a stake, interact with it by pressing the A button and pulling it out by selecting ‘Yes’ on the prompt. Then, it will crumble and disappear. After pulling out all eight stakes, the player will hear a mysterious cry from the shrine.

Shrine Location

After removing all eight purple stakes, the Grasswither Shrine is now unlocked. Before the player can reach the Grasswither Shrine, it is required that the player’s Koraidon or Miraidon has learned the climbing ability. This ability can be unlocked once the player has found and defeated Dondozo, the False Dragon Titan.

The Grasswither Shrine can be found southeast of South Province (Area One) or southwest of the South Province (Area Five) Pokemon Center (slightly south of where the purple stake that was overlooking the sea was located).

Upon finding Grasswither Shrine, approach and interact with the purple door by pressing the A button. Then the player will hear a faint sound from inside the shrine. Next, select ‘Yes’ on the prompt when asked if the player wants to touch the shrine to open it.

After that, the legendary Pokemon Wo-Chien will emerge from the shrine and start a battle against the player. This is now the player’s chance to catch Wo-Chien!

Catching Wo-Chien

It is important to note that the Wo-Chien is a Level 60 Dark and Grass-type Pokemon and will use Dark and Grass-type moves, so it would be best to use Pokemon that are resistant to these moves. Also, be careful when using Pokemon with moves that can effectively damage Wo-Chien, as you do not want to defeat it accidentally.

Also, save your progress before approaching the Grasswither Shrine so you can load the game once Wo-Chien is accidentally defeated. If you forgot to do that, you can wait 10 minutes, then restart the game to respawn the fallen Legendary Pokemon.
