PS4 and PS5 players who purchased avatars during the PS3 era are out of luck, as they cannot be used on modern consoles. However, Sony has consistently given free PSN avatars, including the recently revealed 15th anniversary PS Plus avatars.
Sony quietly pulled purchased PS3 avatars from PS5, PS4 ahead of releasing new free PSN avatars
Announced in the PlayStation Blog post regarding the PS Plus August 2025 free monthly games, Sony will be giving away free PSN avatars to celebrate the 15th anniversary of its online gaming service. Members who claim the set will receive avatars based on some of the most popular PlayStation games, including Cyberpunk 2077, Hogwarts Legacy, Diablo IV, God of War Ragnarok, and Twisted Metal.
They can be claimed starting August 5, and interested players must be PS Plus members to redeem the free goodies.
These free avatars come just a couple of months after PS5 players began noticing their premium PS3 avatars were inaccessible on console and the PS App. While the older avatars don’t work on modern consoles, players who still use their PS3 can still access their older avatars.
As previously mentioned above, the free PSN avatars celebrating PS Plus’ 15th anniversary will release the same day as the free monthly PS Plus games for August 2025. Next month’s selection includes Day Z, My Hero One’s Justice 2, and the critically acclaimed soulslike based on Pinocchio, Lies of P. All PS Plus subscribers can claim the free games from August 5 to September 1.
As these three games enter, the three free PS Plus games for July 2025 will be removed. This includes Diablo IV, The King of Fighters XV, and Jusant. Players will want to act fast if they want any of these games, as they have until August 4 to redeem them.
