The PS6 and its accompanying handheld will be backwards compatible with both PS5 and PS4 games, according to a new report. A reliable insider found this information in a leaked Sony document pertaining to the upcoming home console (code name Orion) and handheld (code name Canis).
PS6, PS6 handheld specs leaked from 2023 presentation
The insider in question is none other than YouTuber Moore’s Law Is Dead (MLID), who’s known for leaking internal Sony documents (and getting copyright strikes from the company in the process). In this case, MLID claims that he got hold of a Sony presentation from 2023, through which the company shared proposed specs for both gaming machines with partner AMD.
The presentation confirmed that PS6 and the PlayStation handheld will be backwards compatible with the previous two generations. Unfortunately, and unsurprisingly, there was no mention of PS3 in the document. But at this point, I’m pretty sure fans have given up hope on PS3 backwards compatibility.
There’s a lot of technical jargon in the presentation, but if you’re curious, you can find a bulletpoint summary on ResetEra or hear it straight from the horse’s mouth in the video linked below.
What sticks out to us is the claim that the handheld may perform better than Microsoft’s Xbox Ally X, although the latter is a PC handheld rather than a console handheld.
